Reconstruction and Renovation of Public Healthcare Institutions

This is the largest healthcare project in the history of independent Republic of Macedonia, which will completely reorganize and renovate the external and internal infrastructure of 41 public healthcare institutions.

 

In the past four years, the first phase of the reconstruction and expansion project of hospitals began, with an investment of 100 million euros, the largest investment in healthcare infrastructure in the past 20 years.

 

A feasibility study has been prepared, and funding has been secured from the Development Bank of the Council of Europe, with construction works already underway on 17 facilities.

 

The project will be implemented in four phases, and the deadline for completion is 2014. The results are already visible! The Government will invest in the reconstruction and renovation of the central facilities of 34 health centers, most of which are more than 50 years old.

 

Public healthcare facilities are being built and renovated across Macedonia: the Surgical Clinics in Skopje, the Institute of Radiology, the Emergency Center, the Pediatric Clinic, the Hematology Clinic, the Cardiology Clinic, the Infectious Diseases Clinic, the Institute for Lung Diseases, the Psychiatric Clinic, the Republic Institute for Transfusion Medicine, the Clinic for Surgical Diseases “St. Naum Ohridski”, the Institute for Lung Diseases – Kozle, and the Specialized Hospital for Gynecology and Obstetrics – Chair.

 

In addition, hospitals are being renovated in Tetovo, Strumica, Veles, Prilep, Ohrid, Kumanovo, Gevgelija, Gostivar, Kičevo, Kočani, as well as the Special Hospital Jasenovo – Veles, the Institute of Nephrology in Struga, and the Psychiatric Hospital in Negorci. Renovations of health centers in Skopje (three polyclinics), Kriva Palanka, and Prilep are in the final stage. In the third phase, along with completing the clinics, a full reconstruction of the City Hospital “8th of September” – Skopje (former Military Hospital) is planned.

 

A new hospital will be built for the residents of Štip, as well as a facility for the needs of the students of the Medical Faculty in Štip.

 

Renovations are also planned for the Clinical Hospital in Bitola, as well as for the general hospitals in Kičevo, Struga, Gevgelija, the Psychiatric Hospital in Demir Hisar, and the Health Center in Ohrid.

 

Activities will continue for the preparation of the construction of a new Clinical Center.

 

The Government will open outpatient clinics in around 100 settlements and rural areas. In this way, it will encourage young doctors to work in rural areas, and at the same time, increase the level of healthcare prevention among the population of the Republic of Macedonia, in accordance with European and global health standards.
